What is self-publishing?
People write books for many reasons, but most have a common goal: to one day see their work in print. First, let's clarify exactly what self-publishing is. Conventionally, to get a book into print, self-published authors were pretty much setting up their own mini publishing houses. These days self-publishing involves uploading a word or PDF file to a company who then makes the subsequent book available in print.
First, agents and publishers will sign you up if your book is good enough, and if you're writing in a genre which has a book-buying audience. 'If the book is good' is subjective. You may think it's terrific, but the professionals will know by page t
hree if they think your book is worth it. But with self-publishing companies, your book + the right services is definitely valued!
Many titles published by the big guys don't sell, so how is a self-published book going to do well? To a writer, self-publi
shing is an incredibly powerful and alluring concept. Beyond putting words on the page, the self-publisher actually controls every aspect of authoring. He or she creates the physical book and actively brings it to an audience.
For book authors, the term 'self-publishing' almost always prompts a sense of important decision-making. This is because to be able to get into the concept, there is a need to decide firmly whether to self-publish or not. Currently, self-publishing is accounting for just a minimal percentage of the entire publishing industry with respect to sales. Because the publishing industry is obviously changing its landscape, it is expected that more and more authors would prefer to self-publish in the future.
We value your hard work. For some authors, their book has taken years to write. Don't let your book collect dust in your desk drawer. Bring it to us, and we will bring your book into the world.
There's a book in everybody!
All of us have a unique story to tell!
We have invaluable life experiences. We have treasured memories – the building blocks that give us substance and make us alive. We have experienced change – the birth of a child, the death of a loved one, or the founding of our town, the rise of our organisations and the development or destruction of our communities. We delve into our past to recall episodes and occasions; our emotions are stirred at the sight of old photographs, copies of birth, death and marriage certificates, piles of old love letters tied tightly with ribbon, postcards from overseas, locked diaries and hidden keepsakes.
Such important things should not be lost! If you have a great idea for a story, then you must write it! If you've written it, you must publish it for others!
Write your favourite genre today - sport, art or a romance book - or enjoy reading one at a fair price from our bookstore associates!
