Which book printing process?

Ultimately it boils down to the time you have to complete the job and the run quantity. The offset printing process tends to be better for larger runs however this printing process takes longer, whereas the digital printing process is good for short runs and takes relatively little time to complete.

So- price based on quantity required and available time are obviously key considerations, but the offset printing process offers the ability to specify PMS colour, so this may actually be the better choice to achieve higher quality results. The final printed effect of solid areas of colour can also be an issue to consider, as the digital printing process can appear less impressive than offset, especially within certain colour ranges.

 Offset Book Printing Process

In the offset printing process, the ink is not pressed directly onto the paper. Instead it is distributed from a metal plate to a rubber mat where it is then set onto paper. Offset printing is the process of indirectly transferring ink to paper through the use of a metal or paper plate. This printing process uses CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black – aka Process or Full Colour) and Antoine spot colours (PMS).

This printing process is widely used for the production of magazines, brochures, flyers etc. Generally speaking, the longer the print run, the lower the cost per 1000. This is because the majority of the cost of the printing process is tied up in the setup, rather than the actual production. The offset printing process produces high quality cost effective results for long print runs.

Most print runs need to be at least 1000 to justify the cost of the setup. Usually, a colour proof is generated prior to the printing process commences, however colour matching is often still made ‘on press’ as the job is run.

Artwork Setup Tips

Spending a few moments to prepare your files before bringing them to Love of Books will give you the best outcome. Love of Books takes pride in being able to work with just about any form of digital artwork however, applying a few simple principles when setting up your file will help simplify the process of preparing and, ultimately, delivering your job in good time.

Include a PDF file if possible

Today’s print workflow systems are dependent on Acrobat PDF files, so there’s a fair chance that we will convert your native document into PDF format for printing. You can speed up the pre-press process by supplying a print ready PDF file with your job, since if it meets our requirements we will use the supplied PDF as art, rather than the native files.

PDF’s should be made to the ‘High Quality’, ‘Press Quality’ or especially ‘PDF/X-1a 2001′ standard, and include bleeds and crops. Color Management options should be set to ‘Color Unchanged’, as this will preserve the document as you created it. We’ll apply the necessary colour management options as part of the print process.

Even if your PDF is not to print standard, it will make a great visual reference for the integrity of the native files. Check that the included PDF looks correct before sending it to Love of Books – if there are any problems with your file they’ll show up on the PDF.

It’s also a good idea to set your Acrobat Pro or Reader (depending on which version you have – we recommend v8 for both) to always display using ‘Overprint Preview’ – some transparency features like InDesign drop shadows do not display correctly in Acrobat unless this is turned on.

Adobe Acrobat Distiller is the best method of creating PDF’s if your design application can not do it natively. If you don’t have Distiller, a free PDF converter is available from http://www.pdf995.com - it works like a physical printer, however it outputs to a PDF file that you can use.

Supply the resource files

Supply all linked images (eg. placed TIFF’s, PSD’s, EPS’s, etc.) fonts and final laser proofs. Many modern design applications have a ‘Collect for Output’ function which can automate this process for you. In most cases this is sufficient, however there are cases where these functions do not completely collect every required file. We recommend that you follow up a ‘collect’ with this checklist before sending in your files.

• Check the links list of your document to ensure that all the images are included. Most design applications have a ‘Links’ palette or ‘Usage’ window which list all the placed files in the design file. Ensure that you have included all the listed files. Any files that are tagged ‘PB’ in the list can be safely ignored, as they have been placed on the pasteboard of the document and are not required for output.
• Check EPS files for nested images. Some EPS files require additional linked images, which usually do not show up in the Links palette. If any of your placed EPS have nested linked images, be sure to include them. This is mainly an issue for older EPS files – most EPS’s created with current software will embed the nested images in the file.
• Check the font list of your document ensuring that all fonts are included. Most design applications have a ‘Find Fonts’ or ‘Usage’ window which list all the used fonts in the design file.
• Ensure that you’ve included all the listed fonts.
• The Collect’ functions are well known for missing non-roman font styles, eg. bold, italic, bold-italic, and only copying the roman font file. These missing styles will need to be copied manually from your system font folder.
• Check that all required files for the type of font are present. Depending on your computer operating system and the type of fonts used, an individual font may consist of one or several files – all of which need to be provided. The document’s application font list will usually display the type of font used for any specific font. Use the table below to identify the type of font and how many files will be needed for it.

Bleeds

Items that reach the trim edge need to be extended a minimum of 3 mm past the trim or page edge into the pasteboard area of the document. This additional image area is known as ‘bleed’.

It’s important as it facilitates a clean trim from the guillotine. Whilst most paper guillotines are fairly accurate today, there’s a few physical factors in relation to paper that can mean the actual position of the trim can vary slightly. Bleed allows for this variance to occur and to avoid the end trimmed product having white edges showing.

Most modern design applications allow for bleed to be specified in the ‘Document Setup’ or ‘Page Setup’ windows. It can also be specified in the ‘Print’ or ‘Export’ dialog boxes.

Consumer software like the Microsoft Office series do not have the capability of specifying bleed. In these applications it is best to set a page size that is 6 mm larger in both directions (eg. an A4 page plus bleed would measure 216 x 303 mm). It is important to note the actual trim line is 3 mm inside from each edge, so any type or logos which should not be cut through need to be kept well within this area.

Bleed is not required when the print image does not reach the trim edge.

Imposition

We use specialized imposition software to lay out print jobs for the most economic use of the paper. All we require to be supplied is the artwork in 1-up form.

We prefer that the file’s page size match the final trim size, or in the case of Microsoft Office, the trim size plus bleed if required. If the artwork is created on a larger page size than the final trim size, then all art must be centred within the larger page with crop marks added 3 mm out from the trim edges.

Documents which meet these requirements can usually be imposed easily. If the artwork is not centred on the document page then IT will require some adjustments to make it suitable for the book printing process, incurring extra processing time and cost.
