Tips and advice on selecting the optimal cover and title for your book!

Hi! And welcome to our eleventh newsletter.

This edition aims to equip you with a deeper knowledge of design principles and will hopefully leave you feeling much more confident about the title and cover design of your book.

Although a great deal of time and thought often goes in to the title and cover design for a book, the importance of this task is still largely overlooked. When approaching this task, the author needs to realize that the quality of the title and cover design is essentially just as important as the book itself. While the content is what the customer is buying, the cover and title is what they see and consequently, the cover and title of your book speaks for the book itself. If these two elements don’t appeal to your audience, you will lose sales.

Front Cover: Why So Important?

To put things in perspective, an author could write a very average book with a knock-out title and cover design and sell more copies than an author with a brilliant book yet an unenticing cover and title. Book covers and titles are very much like a movie poster or cover in the sense that it advertises the work. A person will not YouTube the preview for a movie or go to an advanced screening if the poster doesn’t catch their eye, and your potential buyer will not turn the book over and read the blurb if your cover and title doesn’t draw their attention. Subsequently, the product isn’t sold.

Points of Sale

Your cover (leads to the blurb)

Your blurb (encourages the sale)

Your book (reader will recommend to others)

A cover has the power to make or break your sale. And at any of these three points, you can gain or lose sales. First is your cover; if your cover and title effectively says what you want it to say about your book, your potential buyer will read your blurb. If your blurb is written well and appeals to your potential buyer, you have made a sale. If your book is skillfully written and of high-quality, your buyer will then recommend it to others and your sales will increase.

Cover

It is important that your cover is not only creative and original, but that it is aesthetically pleasing. The artistic elements of line, shape, tone, colour, form and texture have the ability to affect the visual appeal of your book. You cover design should incorporate all of these elements, and display them neatly and professionally. When designing your cover or checking the design that someone else has done for you, take some time to look at it and ask yourself if it looks right. If not, ask yourself why. Take not of the path that your eyes are encouraged to follow across the page. What is the focus of the cover and are your eyes attracted to this first? Is there any empty space? Do the visible or invisible lines of your cover design align with each other? These are all relevant questions to consider when designing and editing your cover.

Title

A title is not only what is seen on the cover of your book, but what will be read and spoken in the media and in general conversation amongst buyers, editors and reviewers. A title should subtly yet cleverly describe your book, roll off the tongue easily and most importantly, be memorable! This is a good opportunity to use rhetorical language devices such as alliteration and assonance (but don’t make it tacky!)

Example – A Little Grace

This picture is a design done by QUT student Beth Parker for a short film. However, as mentioned before, movie posters and book covers share much of the same qualities and work to do virtually the same thing.

This picture is aethetically pleasing as it uses the elements of art/design effectively. The woman and little girl are light and wearing light clothing, and are contrasted against the dark background (grass) so to cause them to stand out in the photo. As the right side of the photo has more black than the left side of the photo (because of the positioning of the people) the black title has been placed slightly to the left so that the picture is evenly balanced.

Notice how the text is aligned on the page, the fonts follow the same invisible lines and the tagline (under title) sits perfectly under the word ‘Grace’ which looks neat and also attracts more attention to the title.

The photo chosen is also appropriate for the genre (Drama), you can look at this cover and have a good idea of the sort of book/film it represents. When using a photo of people on your cover, ensure it is relevant, and another great way to attract attention is to have one of your subjects looking at the camera – eye contact is powerful!

To End

The key for a successful cover design for non-fiction books is to keep it reasonably simplistic and to maintain a consistent theme. All elements of your cover design should complement one another. When perusing the shelves or online book stores, overcrowded and busy cover designs may deter your potential buyer. As much as we are told growing up not to “judge a book by its cover”, that is exactly what you and your audience does. So if you want to maximize sales and marketability, remember that when that comes to your book cover and title!

The barcode, representing a product’s number in a form which can be read by an electronic barcode scanner, is used by publishers, booksellers and libraries to order sell and manage books using computerized inventory and cataloguing systems.

Including a barcode on your book will make it easier for a bookseller or library to sell or lend your book. The barcode should be included on the back cover of the book, for ease of use.

Barcodes can be generated without an ISBN/ISSN, however if you have either of these numbers, it makes more sense to generate the barcode from them, as they are complementary systems. If you don’t have an ISBN/ISSN, you will need to contact EAN (see address above), who administer barcodes in Australia.

Thorpe Information Services offers publishers the option of obtaining barcodes in a ready-to-use format with their ISBNs. Contact Thorpe (contact details are listed in the ‘ISBN’ section, above) for an application form to have a barcode produced with your ISBN. Alternatively, barcode suppliers are listed in the Yellow Pages of major cities, under the heading ‘Identification Systems’.

Love of Books ISBN Package again takes care of your barcode application.

Plagiarism

In this issue we will be discussing the issue of Online Publishing on websites such as Amazon, and the risks a writer takes when choosing this method of publication.

In the area of plagiarism, Amazon has been at the attention of the news in the month of January, particularly due to author Adam Penenberg and one of his articles.

Plagiarism: Why Worry?

The Pros of Online Publishing are simple. It’s cheap, fast, and accessible, it bypasses the middle man and reaches a wide international audience at the push of a button. However, the dangers of plagiarism across the internet are almost entirely unavoidable. Although online platforms like Amazon endeavour to remove any plagiarised material, this is often only able to be done when the website admin are alerted of the infringing material. Even in cases where the administration is notified of plagiarised material and it is immediately taken down, it’s all too easy for the offender to simply re-upload the content under different title/s.

For example, Penenberg writes that one particular author had a total of 19 ebooks that were entirely stolen, often from free sites such as Literotica. This isn’t a new issue for Amazon, as the options for editing and selling online material was never fully secured so that only the author was able to do so.

This is also an issue for the larger self-publishing industry as a whole. In the age of technology, with new loopholes being discovered faster than enhanced security, the absolute guarantee of secure online material seems to be getting further and further out of reach.

This issue of intellectual property is not only a problem for the author, but for the customer. Referring back to Penenberg’s article, a customer recently purchased ‘Dracula’s Amazing Adventure’, only to discover it was just a plagiarised version of the original ‘Dracula’, available for free online. So then, how much are online platforms such as Amazon to blame for the lack of security? One could say quite a lot. But in saying that, no matter the advances in copyright and online security, an author will always be inevitably running the risk of plagiarism when posting their work on internet platforms. And it doesn’t look much like these online platforms are willing to assume complete responsibility in the cases that it does happen.

Plagiarism – What Now?

Despite the lack of lawful punishment in regards to online plagiarism, Amazon and other such online material distributors have the ethical obligation to maintain the responsibility for authors, their potential buyers and anyone else using their service. As a service that is creating revenue from the distribution and purchase of others’ writing, Amazon, along with other such services is certainly lacking in the security department.

Suggestions such as all material being put through a ‘plagiarism checker’ before it is uploaded have been tossed around, but the reality of it is, implementing such processes means the host site (Amazon) has to sacrifice more time, and consequently more money, which they would prefer to put back into the revenue rather than securing the legitimacy of the online material.

Amazon is being confronted on its laziness and tendency to do the bare minimum required, and hopefully, they will pick up their act and recreate a safe and more secure environment for online publishing, selling, buying and sharing.

5 Ways to avoid plagiarism

1. Link To Yourself

Linking to yourself discourages plagiarism in a way that even the most advanced copyright enforcement strategies can’t. When publishing online (and even in print if it’s not too obtrusive) include a link to another one of your works. It doesn’t have to be extreme or break the flow of your writing, just find a subtle way of linking your work back to yourself.

2. Write Personally

Particularly in non-fiction writing, a good anti-plagiarism tool is to include stories or even little pieces of information about yourself in your writing. Doing this means that for someone to copy your work, they would have to put in the time and effort needed to edit out the personal information in a way that the piece of writing still flows.

3. Shift Your Audience/Tone

In many cases, the likelihood of plagiarism can depend somewhat on the nature of your target audience. For example, an adult audience may not be as likely to plagiarise as a youth audience. I.e. the more educated your audience is, the less likely they are to plagiarise.

However, if you are not able or willing to change your target audience, you can try changing your tone or style. For instance, if you write for a teenage audience, try writing with a tone that sounds less like the voice of one of your readers. The downside to this approach is that while avoiding plagiarism, you may risk decreasing your works marketability.

4. Write Longer

Plagiarisers will look for a piece of writing that is short. Generally, they don’t want to waste their time reading long, in-depth paragraphs or editing large chunks of writing, so they will instead seek out something shorter. However, if your work relies on a short and sharp delivery, this approach may not be the best for you.

5. Have A Unique Style

A crucial technique. Although this may be a little hard, particularly for writers who do not have much (or any) reputation, this is a very important element to incorporate into your writing. Those looking to use the work of others will search for writing that is generic and fits perfectly into a popular demographic. Although it may take years, work on developing a voice that is unique to you and others will come to recognize it over time.

As nice as it would be to live in a world where everyone respects and values each other’s work, unfortunately this is not always the case. There is no absolute guarantee against plagiarism, but there is advice and guidelines that we can follow to armour our work as best we can.

If you are happy with your formatting and layout of your document OR Book you can easily pdf your own work ready for print.

Request a free template here: template@selfpublisher.net.au, state the approx. page count (printed pages) and the size you want your book to be completed as, also the name of the program you are going to be using to create your file in. You will receive a FREE template to get you started. The template is a setup file that has a mirror binding edge and considerable margins to ensure your text sits close to the centre of the page when printed.

If you don’t have a pdf program you can go here for a free program. It comes with an advertisement but a cheap 10 dollar investment removes the advertisement.

Suitable for many desktop applications, however if you have a complicated layout and or have a lot of colour images in your file then you are advised to use a more robust desktop application such as Adobe Indesign.

How To Send Files To Your Love of Books Designer

Create a folder – name it (your book)

Inside the folder, create other folders – Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, etc.

Inside each folder, create another folder– one for IMAGES. Place all your images inside the images folder reated to the relevant chapter.

- Be sure to name all files clearly and appropriately.

- If your book contains images, ensure that when saved into the IMAGES folder, that it is named according to what page it is on. For example: “page 1”. If a page has more than one image on it, be sure that we can distinguish the differences. For example: “page 1 imge 1” and “page 1 image 2”. ( Tip: Write the caption that is to appear with the image as the image file name also)

To avoid confusion, check that you only send us the files that you want to be printed.

HOT TIP: If you take time organising your documents and images when you first start to set up your file, you will save yourself and us a great deal of time. Being organised also means that there is less chance of files going missing or being accidentally used twice. It also makes our process quicker.

How To Send Images

All images should be supplied at 300 dpi. Ideally no less than 220 dpi.

For full-colour printing, convert your images from RGB to CMYK using image editing software such as Photoshop. If you don’t have such a program remember all Love of Books clients receive this service at a reduced cost.

Note: Your files will increase in size when you change them from RGB to CMYK. If you are unable to do this please place the images in the appropriate Colour or Grey folders and we will convert them for a small charge.

For the best print quality we recommend you supply all photographs and images at 300dpi at the size they are to be printed. If you can only provide images at 72dpi they must be at least 4 times the size you want them to appear in your publication.

Please supply images as either TIF, JPEG or EPS files and avoid files such as GIF, BITMAP and Internet pictures, as these formats are not high enough quality for printing.

We are only able to reproduce your picture at the quality you provide – we cannot improve on the quality of your image. Be aware that lower resolution images can look good quality on-screen but may appear blurred when printed. To check the quality of your image, open it in your standard photo editing package.

If you have taken your photo on a digital camera please ensure the camera has been set on the highest quality setting. Do not downgrade the quality of the image before sending it to us.

Resolution: If creating or using images in a program like Adobe Photoshop, your files should be at least 300 dpi at final print size. You can check this in Photoshop via the Image menu then the Image Size option.

Linked Images

If you are sending your file to us for completion as an indesign package or as a final pdf:

When linking images, it’s important that you do not re-name or move any linked files to another folder once they have been placed. Before supplying your document, make sure that all links are intact and that none have been broken.

Proofing

We will supply you with a proof copy of your completed file which you must check carefully for mistakes and alterations you wish to be made.

Ensure that when you are checking your file after it has been completed that you go through it thoroughly. When marking the mistakes and alterations, be sure that you send the itemized file alterations via email. It is preferred that you do so this way:

For example:

Page 61, line 23 – change ‘teh’ to ‘the’

We do allow for a limited amount of edits with your text within the quoted cost of your design/formatting if we are doing this for you. However numerous and repeated editing changes are charged at an hourly rate.

Checklist

Ensure that all files are supplied and named correctly.

Self publishing trend provided by Love of Books self publishing success- Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, Canberra, Hobart & Australia-wide!

The self publishing trend is on the increase as Baby Boomers and aspiring new authors choose the self publishing route as many tire of red-tape, and the difficulty of achieving success through the traditional publishing method.

Love of Books self publishing success. Contact Us to get your dream started!
Australians are increasingly embracing self publishing as a viable method to get their books published. This is evidenced by the many web sites rapidly emerging that help self publishers bring their dream book to reality.

So why are Australians increasingly embracing self publishing? One of the main reasons is demographic and lifestyle changes; with Baby Boomers coming to the end of their working careers, many moving towards a consultancy role or working from home. As a result, their new role or increase in spare time has allowed them to invest more time into authoring books.

Secondly, traditional publishers have made it so hard for authors to get their book published it is often not a very pleasant experience. For every 1 that is accepted there are 99 manuscripts that are rejected. The odds are not very good. For the author, there are many avenues nowadays that can help them promote and sell their books, perhaps even better than the publishing houses can in many cases. The first of these is the internet, if used properly, it can instantly help authors sell their books globally. What’s more, the self publishing author usually gets a higher percentage of profit from the sale of each book.

There have been many books that had started off as self published books and have eventually become hugely successful. Kiyosaki’s “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” which has been on the New York Times Bestseller list for over 5 years in a row, and the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series which has sold over $1 billion in revenue, are just some examples. The real need therefore for self publishing companies is a place where they can get all that information to successfully self publish, and to get the best chance of success at self publishing. Love of Books is one company that takes a genuine interest in author’s success in self-publishing and strives to deliver the best results possible for each client.

Self publishing appears to be set in continuing its growth in Australia. For the first time, it appears that the self publishing author has good a chance of achieving success especially with guidance and support from a caring publishing company.

When you finish writing your book, you should:

1. Have some proofreading done. Although it’s something you can easily do, it’s a good idea to get someone else, even two other people to proofread for typing and spelling errors again. It is a fact that we don’t always see our own mistakes. If you really don’t have someone proficient enough to proofread your manuscript, pay a professional to do it if your book is meant for the general public. You will benefit from this immensely!

2. The next thing is to think about is how you want your book to look or your book layout. If you are totally new to self publishing, get some ideas from checking out other printed books. When you have decided on the style that you want, pay particular attention to the book size, the font type, position of headers, footers, page numbering, style of titles or headings, page, and chapter layout. If your book contains page after page of continuous text, it is important to introduce space at right intervals in order not to tax your readers. Clever use of space can actually enhance the visual appeal of your book. And if you have pictures in your book, make sure there’s sufficient space to separate your text from the pictures.

3. Your book title may be a short line but it can be your biggest attention grabber next to your book cover design. A title that impacts someone who sees it is more likely to make her want to find out more, and adds to your book sales. However, your book title must also be relevant so take time to think of a good one that describes your book.A short but memorable title which reads easily is more likely to capture attention. Even though a shopper may not buy your book immediately, she is more likely to go back to buy it when your subject matter becomes useful to her later if she remembers the book title. If your book is a business or a how-to book, it may help to include a sub title that offers a solution or which expands on the main title.

4. Now, your books cover design. If you are not an artist or experienced in designing, it’s wise to pay a professional to do it. Your book cover is your no.1 selling aid and it must grab shoppers’ attention if you want it to sell. Don’t forget your book is competing with thousands of others for attention!Choice of colors, image, style of fonts are important consideration and should be appropriate to your subject matter. It’s well worth your time to study the book covers of bestsellers and popular books even if you are not designing it yourself.Your ISBN with barcode should be included in your back cover. The title of your book and your name should also appear on the book spine.

5. You should also have a Title page and a Copyright© page in your book. You may also include your CiP number (optional). The Title page can appear on the 1st right hand page of your book.6. The Copyright page looks nice on the 1st left had page of your book. The Copyright page should also include your ISBN number. You may wish to insert your CiP (optional), your publisher name, and your contact details here.7. When your book is ready for publishing, your files need to be converted both your manuscript and your book cover into PDF format as separate files.

Some people say they need a small fortune to publish their book

Well being a self-publisher you don’t need a lot of money. Just a little support from the right people and of course a true desire to make your dream of becoming a published author a reality!

Nothing like the feeling of finally seeing that hot little book in your hot little hands.

If you use mainstream distribution channels you will be paying a large fee for their service also.

I’m not trying to put you off mainstream distribution. If you are not a sales person it could be an option.

You really need your own ISBN so if you are offered a free ISBN ask “Is it my very own?”A true publishing company will give you enough book marketing advice and tips to sit you on the right track with your book marketing.

So get your manuscript out of hiding give it a type over and talk to someone who cares!

Successful self published authors started with a plan. Have you got one?

If you want to be a true self-publisher then you need to sit back and take control of your own publishing experience that includes marketing.

Book Marketing: You’re the Self-publisher of your own book.

Check them out and compare see for yourself
www.lulu.com www.amazon.com www.wildandwoolley.com.au http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self publishing www.seaviewpress.com

Getting positive feedback from your readers simply means that your book is worth publishing. However, distribution and marketing are the most important elements in publishing because without these 2, getting book sales is next to impossible.

We can set up your own website first so that you can centralise book orders. With this, you will be receiving all the royalty for your book. We will have your book available in all major resellers such as, Angus and Robertson, Borders, Barnes and Noble, EBay and a lot more. The reason is that, It’s best to sell all books you have printed yourself because you’re essentially getting more.

After setting up your website, We can set up a Press Release Campaign to target different media outlets help out in informing about your book. This Press Release would have all vital ordering information such as your Name, Book Title, Phone, Email and Website so people know how to order your book. I will also boost your website information in Google by creating a search information about you. Lastly, I will set up an email marketing campaign generated to target all audiences from coast to coast.

Having a personal website means that you can be viewed by anyone, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year – as long as they have Internet access. It is one of the truly efficient ways of marketing your work. With your own website, millions around the world will know about you and your books; you can link your website to forge stronger business relationships with online bookstores, book clubs and author organizations; you can level the literary field with the more established authors; the possibilities, it goes without saying, are endless.

Although you provide the content of your website, Our copywriters are on hand to write content for the pages while our designers design a professional web page. We will provide you with your own domain using either your ‘NAME’ or your ‘BOOKTITLE’ for easy-to-remember web address. Excerpts from your book may be added just so your audience will have a glimpse of your work. You may opt to have 3 or more pages for your website, depending on the service level you will choose.

To be able to create a buzz about your website:

Include a Press Release Campaign

A Press release campaign is a marketing service targeted to media. This can be TV, Radio and Print. Media outlets can local, national and international.

Our Copywriters can create “Media Buzz” by sending newsworthy information and compelling article about you and your book to different media outlets of your choice.

Given that these media outlets would respond, then we will be arranging a publicity interview for you.

To Generate positive results to your website:

Include a Google search marketing campaign

Targets millions of Google users and drive visitors to a website where they can purchase your book. By strategically placing your ad on the search results page when people search for words associated with your book, you can drive interested parties to your website, increase your online presence, and maximise your book sales.

You will be increasing your online presence with your book marketing through this. You may choose from different keywords relating to you and your book. Examples of keywords can be your name, title of your book, or anything that would lead them to see your website.

This Google search is connected to your website for easy access.

This all helps to generate potential book sales.

Include an Email Marketing Campaign:

What is Opt-in Email Marketing? This campaign entails a huge email broadcast, sent out to people who have opted-in to receive commercial marketing messages. This is a ready audience interested to hear about newly published books. They can then easily click-through to your own website or wherever else they choose. Because they are subscribers this is by no means spam.

How does it work? – our talented creative team will write and design a custom email message for you, complete with: A Compelling subject line, An Image of your book’s cover and Quick and easy click-through ordering to the destination of your choice.

These are subscriber-based who opted to receive information about your book. Before this is sent, we will pre-qualify list to make sure that those who’ll be receiving emails are looking for books with genre such as yours.

You have the option to go for 1 million to 10 million targeted subscribers/recipients.

Benefits:

Centralise book orders through your website

Increase online presence through Google Search Marketing

Possibly featured in different newspaper or magazine through press release

Increase Sales through Email Marketing Campaign

Chances are, all your stock books will be sold out

SEO- Search Engine optimisation & Internet Marketing

SEO is the single most complex and bewildering part of designing and marketing a new website. There are hundreds of companies offering ‘Get on Page #1 of Google” guaranteed. Some are ridiculously cheap and some are so stupidly expensive its hard to figure out who’s legitimate and who’s not.

One thing is certain; SEO takes time.

Successful SEO requires the vast majority of your pages to be fine tuned to suit your objectives.

However, the good news about SEO is once you have the fundamentals in place you should be able to handle 75% of your internet marketing and SEO in-house. There will always be some technical things that you will need companies like Explainafide for but with our $750 attack plan you should be in a position to gain recognition for your brand without too much external help.

No contracts.

We understand that cash flow is very sporadic for small businesses and start-ups and as such we don’t use contracts. One month you might want mountains of work done over and above the suggested $200, another month funds might be tight and you don’t want anything at all.

Our SEO and Internet marketing plans:

Level 1- Current Website Analysis- $300

Full website Analysis – We will assess the success of your website in terms SEO. We will report on what keywords you’re targeting, what you should be targetting and how to make small changes to improve your rankings. Often the smallest changes make the biggest difference.

SEO Review what is working and what isn’t in terms of Usability. Are customers finding what they want when they visit your website or are they leaving disappointed?

Suggest small structural changes that will assist in helping your ranking.

Review your links and comments about your company on the internet.

Suggest Social Media and other Blogs that will be worth connecting with.

Level 2 – The Attack Plan – Full Market & Website Analysis – One off $750.00

Armed with this full market report and SEO package you should be able to work on 75% of your SEO and online marketing in house. It sets up a strategy for the long term where you have a manual of things to work on yourself

Conduct a Full Analysis of your Competitors so we can establish for certain why they are performing better and how we can adopt their strategies.

Suggest redesigning parts of your website to ensure you are converting visitors to customers.

As an example; between 50%-60% of shopping carts are abandoned before check out.

Improve Usability of your site so people find what they want quickly and easily

Suggest small structural changes that will help with your SEO. ie. Html and Title Tag changes.

Review issues with download speed. In the era of smart phones it is vital to have a fast loading site.

Research your target audience and potential market both online and offline- competitors, potential partners, and emerging markets.

Keyword Research- learning what words people use when they search for terms relating to your industry is vitally important.

Run your current articles and pages through an Algorithm that is similar to Google’s to find the best words to spice up your content (without changing much content).

Inform you of the best Affiliate marketing options available for your niche (if applicable).

Review the visual aspects of your website. Add some new photographs, suggest different colours or even additional graphics might be needed to spruce up the site. The proverbial lick of paint.

Submit Sitemap to Google so it knows all the pages in your website.

Set up Analytics so we can monitor your website so we understand what pages are successful, what aren’t and take action to improve them (this will take at least 1 month to get solid results).

Suggest websites that may be great for you to build mutually beneficial relationships.

Assist with some Social Media Advice- what might help your business, what might be a waste of time and what new social media start ups might be appropriate to join.

Training and advice via phone or email on the basics of SEO (1 hour included, $55.00 p/hour for any additional advice)

Give you a working list of websites and blogs that will be great for SEO and subsequently backlinks- not all links are weighted the same.

List of reliable SEO blogs for further reading.

Recommend 5 e-books that are well worth reading on the mystical art of SEO.

Small Business/ Creative Marketing Package – $750 initially (as above) then recommended $200 p/month

Ongoing SEO work & Assistance:

Monitor your website so we understand what pages are successful, what aren’t and take action to improve them.

Create new content in the form of new articles or add more oomph to your copy.

Clean up redundant pages ensuring your website loads as fast as possible.

URL optimisation – making URLs search engine friendly.

Issue Press Releases and Social Media Announcements on your behalf.

Set-up some more complex programs that can assist with SEO such geositemaps, microformats.

Continually review the market to see any changes that might be happening and how you can benefit from them.

Contact you regarding any new technologies that maybe of assistance for you.

Build inbound links to your website.

Submit your site and update your listings on some key directories. Most directories are nect to useless but there are some that are worthwhile.

Set up some guest posts for you on various other blogs.

Monitor any issues Google might have in crawling and indexing your site and remedy them.

Medium Sized Businesses – $750 initially (as above) then $400+ p/month

Once you get to larger scale websites the maintenance and reporting time varies widely as such it really is a case by case price. If you want to get #1 on Google for keyword ‘Accountant Sydney’ it will take some serious mouse clicks, keyboard strokes and late night pizzas so I won’t even be brave enough to give you a gustimate here.

Book Publishing companies that can offer support, advice on all aspects of the processes including book marketing, good service and provide you with quality printing and workmanship of your book is your answer.

When choosing a publisher for your book, sit back and think! What important factors will influence your decision? The whole idea of self-publishing is: as the author, you maintain control over the book production.

There are many reasons for self-publishing your book, and they usually relate to your head, your heart or your wallet.

In order to make your self-publishing venture a success, you need to be very clear about why you are doing it, and what will be required. Your reasons will influence every decision you make, both large and small.

The pros and cons of self-publishing your book:

You are in total control of the cover, design and contents – you are also totally to blame! You have to come up with the money to pay for it all – but you get to keep all of the profits. (And if you’re sensible, you certainly won’t make a loss!)

If you want to sell nationally, you will have to wrestle with distributors and bookshops – they will take a large portion of your cover price.

There are lots of small ‘marketplaces’ where you can sell your book successfully and commercial publishers can’t (it can be an advantage to be small).

It provides the opportunity to experiment, to create and publish outside the mainstream, to offer something new and different to the world.

Your decision to self-publish can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience with the right services and advice.

IT is our sweetest icon which was once the Coast’s biggest employer.

On Saturday, November 26, the Big Pineapple in Woombye will host a reunion with finger food, live music and special guests for all former employees.

Author Kerry Brown will also launch her book Our Sweetest Icon, celebrating the Big Pineapple story, at the function.

Ms Brown said the reunion would mark the start of a new era for the popular tourist attraction.

Like many locals she was sad to see the once thriving icon fall into disrepair.

“I remember the buses lined along the road every day and the car parks overflowed with visitors from all over the nation and I wondered how ice-creams and train rides could possibly go wrong,” Ms Brown said.

“From the day it opened in 1971, the Big Pineapple was such an amazing place and this untold story is such a rich chapter of the nation and Queensland’s history.

“The reunion gives the men and women who worked so hard at making it a magical place the opportunity to catch up and celebrate the new beginnings.”

Big Pineapple general manger Paul Ziebarth said the reunion had already attracted significant interest with more than 300 tickets sold.

“We are looking forward to meeting the people who made it such a special icon, hearing their stories from the past and sharing our vision for the future,” he said.

Ms Brown said researching for her book was a challenge as information was very limited.

But her efforts uncovered many original documents that are now part of the book which tells the story through the lives of the people who created, designed, built, supplied, worked and visited the attraction.

“The book justifies the heritage listing and shows how significant the place was in the development of tourism and agriculture and why it has left a lasting place in the hearts and minds of millions of people who went there,” Ms Brown said.

Two weeks ago, the weekly Big Pineapple Growers Market returned to the site and attracted more than 4000 visitors.

Ms Brown said everyone was delighted to see the site’s renovations under way while they shopped at the produce stalls.

Rights and Responsibilities – Details

The BowkerLink™

The BowkerLink™ system provides publishers with an automated tool to update or add to their listings in Bowker’s Global Books In Print database. Publishers may also view and update their publisher contact information.

Australian and New Zealand data appears in the Global Books in Print online and CD-Rom products. Your new book will be listed available for sale in thousands of bookstores world-wide.

Data on Australian-published and New Zealand-published titles also appears in Australian Books in Print and New Zealand Books in Print, respectively.

Love of Books will complete your ISBN application using the details you have provided to us on your Love of Books ISBN form, place your bar code on the back of your book, complete the CiP process, print and post the books to the relevant libraries as well as register your title with Bowkerlink for the low-cost of only $280.00. (Cost of the postage is included).

CIP – Cataloguing-in-Publication

This is voluntary

The National Library of Australia (NLA) manages Cataloguing-in-Publication (CiP) data, which is used by libraries in Australia and around the world to catalogue books.

A CiP entry includes the name of the authors, the book’s title and subjects, and the book’s ISBN (you must have an ISBN in order to obtain CiP).

While CiP data is not a legal requirement, CiP entries are listed on Kinetica, the NLA’s database of material held in Australian libraries, ensuring that books can be used by a wide audience.

As CiP information should be included on the printed version of your book, the NLA will prepare a CiP entry for your book before it is published, from a form completed by you.

The CiP information should be printed in your book according to the guidelines provided by the NLA.

An information brochure and application forms can be obtained online at the NLA’s web site, or by contacting: Cataloguing-in-Publication Unit National Library of Australia Canberra ACT 2600 Tel (02) 6262-1458, Fax (02) 6273-4492 Email cip@nla.gov.au Website www.nla.gov.au/services/CIP.html

Legal deposit

As the name suggests, legal deposit is a legal requirement to ensure that copies of publications are deposited in libraries in the country in which they are published.

In Australia, the Copyright Act 1968 and a number of State Acts require publishers to provide one copy of any work they publish to the National Library of Australia and to the relevant library/ies in the state in which it is published.

Legal deposit ensures that your book can be identified and used by as many people as possible, now and in the future.

You should provide copies of your book for legal deposit as soon as possible after publication, although legal deposit libraries will contact publishers when they find that they have not received a publication required for legal deposit.

The time frame within which a book must be lodged with the appropriate libraries varies from state to state, but, generally, it must be deposited within one to two months of publication. There is no charge for legal deposit.

An information brochure listing requirements and contact details for each state can be obtained by contacting: Legal Deposit Unit National Library of Australia Canberra ACT 2600 Tel (02) 6262-1312, Fax (02) 6273-4322 Email: legaldep@nla.gov.au Website: www.nla.gov.au/services/ldeposit.html

Love of Books includes the legal deposit of your books as well as the process of the application of your CiP number if you select the CiP Services as an added option included in the LOVE OF BOOKS ISBN PACKAGE.

EAN (GS1 – formerly the Australian Product Number)

EAN Australia administers the standard worldwide numbering and bar coding system used to identify products, goods, services, locations and shipments, in many different industry sectors. In the book sector, the EAN (GS1) can be calculated from the ISBN/ISSN.

EAN Australia provides this service and encourages publishers to join in order to receive many other benefits like newsletters, barcode testing, and the software to calculate check digits from your ISBNs/ISSNs. The EAN number is then represented by an EAN 13 digit barcode – see barcode section below.

For EAN information contact: EAN Australia2 KingstonTown Close(Locked Bag 10) Oakleigh VIC 3166 National Tel Number 1300-366-033, Fax (03) 9569-1525Web site www.ean.com.au

Australian Books in Print & GNAB

All books published in Australia are eligible for free inclusion in D W Thorpe’s Australian Books in Print (AusBiP), which is used by libraries and bookshops to identify and order titles for their customers.

It is currently produced in two different formats: an annual bound edition and a monthly edition on microfiche; and it will soon be available on-line. Australian Books in Print includes lists of Australian titles and authors, as well as contact details for Australian publishers and distributors.

Australian Books in Print is an excellent form of free advertising for your book, it is important that you provide up-to-date details for inclusion in each edition. To ensure that libraries and bookshops are able to locate and order your books easily, it is essential that you provide as much information as possible, and as early as possible prior to the publication of your book.

Should any details change during the production process, your entry in Australian Books in Print will be updated free of charge, as soon as you notify D W Thorpe in writing, quoting the relevant ISBN.

Thorpe’s free entry forms allow you to add new titles and Thorpe will assist you in completing them if necessary. Guide to New Australian Books is a unique listing and description of newly published Australian books.

Each entry includes an annotation (a description of the work’s contents), full bibliographic details, author, editor, illustrator and subject index.

To be eligible for entry into GNAB, you need to send a copy of your work to Thorpe Information Services as soon as possible after publication. When submitting, please include a notification of its all-inclusive recommended retail price and the month and year of its publication.

Copyright

• Copyright does not protect facts or information.

• Copyright may, however, protect “compilations” of information such as catalogues, databases, dictionaries, directories and tables, even though individual facts or items in the compilation are not protected.

• You do not need permission to reproduce particular facts from a compilation (such as a name, address and telephone number from a telephone directory). However, you will generally need permission to reproduce all ora “substantial part” of a compilation.• Copyright also protects forms, if they are sufficiently “original”.

Australian Copyright Council

The Australian Copyright Council is a non-profit organisation whose objectives are to:• assist creators and other copyright owners to exercise their rights effectively;• raise awareness in the community about the importance of copyright;• identify and research areas of copyright law which are inadequate or unfair;• seek changes to law and practice to enhance the effectiveness and fairness of copyright;• foster co-operation amongst bodies representing creators and owners of copyright.

The Australian Copyright Council has been assisted by the Commonwealth Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body. © Australian Copyright Council 2008. Read more: www.copyright.org.au

Barcode

The barcode, representing a product’s number in a form which can be read by an electronic barcode scanner, is used by publishers, booksellers and libraries to order sell and manage books using computerized inventory and cataloguing systems.

Including a barcode on your book will make it easier for a bookseller or library to sell or lend your book. The barcode should be included on the back cover of the book, for ease of use. Barcodes can be generated without an ISBN/ISSN, however if you have either of these numbers, it makes more sense to generate the barcode from them, as they are complementary systems.
